Dr. Vidalia Lesmo, manager of CUIDA Chagas implementation research in Paraguay, shared in an interview the lessons learned, challenges, and achievements of the project in the country. According to her, leading this initiative as a Paraguayan professional represents a great challenge, but also an experience of much learning and growth. 2i141e
The main objective of CUIDA Chagas in Paraguay is to contribute to the elimination of vertical transmission of Chagas disease by expanding access to diagnosis, treatment, and comprehensive care with innovative and sustainable strategies. Currently, the project is present in six districts: Concepción, Caacupé, Paraguarí, Mariscal Estigarribia, Villa Elisa, and Paso Horqueta.
Among the greatest challenges of the testing phase, Dr. Vidalia highlights the need for logistical organization, training of professionals, and raising awareness among the population, especially women of childbearing age who often do not attend health services. “There was no spontaneous demand, so we needed to adapt our actions to the reality of each group,” she explains.
In the treatment phase, low risk perception among asymptomatic patients, a shortage of trained professionals, and difficulties in performing tests such as electrocardiograms in some regions were obstacles overcome with local strategies such as counseling, close monitoring, and home visits.
Continuing care is also a priority, with actions such as periodic visits, telephone monitoring, training of community leaders, and self-care groups. “We are creating a structure that can be sustained even after the end of the project, as it is being implemented within the Ministry of Health itself,” says the manager.
Reflecting on the next steps, Dr. Vidalia reinforces the importance of replicating successful strategies in other regions of the country and sending a message to Paraguayan families: “We will make every effort to ensure that Chagas disease is on the Ministry of Health’s priority agenda and to guarantee the necessary resources.”
