Mercedes Sosa inspires campaign to raise awareness of Chagas disease in the Americas 6o1644

On World Chagas Disease Day 2025, the CUIDA Chagas project turned memory into presence and art into resistance. Inspired by the life and songs of Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa, the campaign mobilized over 5,000 people across four Latin American countries — Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, and Paraguay — through cultural activities, testing initiatives, community engagement, and a broad online mobilization. 1f1t4w

With the theme “All the voices, all: art and culture for the right to health”, the campaign embraced the symbolic power of Latin American culture as a tool for struggle, belonging, and transformation. The singer, a symbol of resistance and defender of marginalized communities, was honored through videos, social media posts, and artistic activities that echoed the cry for justice and care.

Digital highlights

Between April 9 and May 9, CUIDA Chagas’ social media channels reached:

  • 116,677 views

  • 55,822 s reached (+1,488%)

  • 1,363 profile visits (+408%)

  • 203 website clicks (+554%)

The Spanish-language post about Mercedes Sosa stood out, with 44,905 views and 1,459 interactions. Around 97% of the audience did not follow the , demonstrating the campaign’s impressive reach. The audience was mostly female (74.2%), aged between 25 and 44.

Territorial mobilization

In total, 56 activities were carried out across 16 municipalities:

  • Brazil: cultural workshops, public speeches, promotion of testing, and strong participation by community leaders and self-care groups.

  • Bolivia: events with medical and nursing students, school activities, and cultural project launches.

  • Paraguay: testing campaigns and broad media coverage.

  • Colombia: activities with children, educational games (such as the Chagas board game), community acceptance, and audiovisual production.

The campaign also generated 57 stories and articles in institutional and media outlets, helping increase visibility of the disease and of the CUIDA Chagas project’s efforts to promote diagnosis, care, and the rights of affected people.

“Mercedes Sosa sang for those without a voice. In this campaign, those voices rang loud, demanding care, dignity, and health equity,” summarizes Javier Abi-Saab, CUIDA Chagas’ Communications and Community Engagement Manager.
